Immigrants detention center, with the writing No man is illegal
50 years old woman who earns a living with acupuncture and massage is a risk to national security? Another woman of 45 years with a husband and two adult children, is a danger to italian citizens?
These are the stories of "illegal" immigrants detained without trial, without reason and without any conviction in the identification and deportation centers (Cie), for a period of up to 6 months.

Messina is sliding down, but they're making the bridge

Messina_bridgeThe rain of recent days in Sicily destroyed houses, people, environment. The number of dead is not certain, yet, but it will be more than twenty. The mud came down from the mountains and took everything away. For some people it is the fault of illegal building in a hydrological risk area.
Maybe we will know the truth in many years, or as often happens in Italy, we will never know it.

garbage_NaplesThrough me the way into the suffering city, Through me the way to the eternal pain, Through me the way that runs among the lost. The words of Dante, today, are very relevant when we think about Naples, about urban decay, about Camorra, or about garbage. The waste crisis is no longer news. The newspapers have other emergencies: new houses (still very few) for L'Aquila citizens, the defence of press freedom, the blunders of Berlusconi.

Colombian soldiers seizing cocaine
There's a war going on for decades all over the world that has caused thousands of deaths without getting the slightest result. It's the war of the world's governments against drugs. An illegal drug is a substance that governments have decided to prohibit quite arbitrarily. Alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs have stronger effects on the human body than many illegal drugs, yet they are legal. The reason why certain drugs have been banned and others not it's only cultural.

Fewer houses for all, in L'Aquila

nohouseforAquila_250909After six months, the tent camps, in L'Aquila, will be closed. The government is celebrating, believing they had reached a milestone, because it had promised "houses ready by the end of September." But the closure of tent camps does not necessarily mean a roof over the head for L'Aquila citizens or the heat of four walls, especially now the cold is coming.

Mafia dead
Dead in the Italian military missions abroad are remembered and celebrated the day of the funerals, but the missions themselves are often ignored by media and public opinion. In Afghanistan and Iraq, Italy already had 54 deaths. But there aren't so many if we consider the other war being fought for decades in some regions of our country, causing 200 to 300 deaths per year. It's the gangs war of mafia organizations.

Rejected refugees
Refugees of war are not criminals or potentially violent people but are men, women and children victims of violence, trying to escape. This is not a difficult concept to understand, but Italy rejects refugees treating them like criminals, like commodities, like waste. Berlusconi's government is criticized for his behavior by the EU and UN, but doesn't give a damn.

"Every human being has the right to submit an application to have the status of refugee or international protection," said European Commission spokesman Dennis Abbott. The EU is aware of the rejection to Libya of a boat with 75 Eritrean and Somali refugees, including 15 women and 3 children, and will send a request of information to the two countries involved, Italy and Malta.

Dead body in the Mediterranean Sea
73 migrants died of starvation in the channel of Sicily, after 20 days adrift in one of the most watched sea of the world. The five survivors, a woman, two men and two minors, say they had sighted several fishing boats that didn't help them. Only the last one gave them a little food and water. Humanitarian organizations consider the story true for the simple fact that is not the first episode of migrants who die at sea in the mediterranean.
