There are no translations available.

In Italy a heat wave is coming and there are people who live in 4 or 6 in a room of 3 meters for 2 with no air conditioning , nor even fans: the prisoners. Italian prisons are dramatically overcrowded and on the verge of general revolt, but no media tell it. Effect of repressive laws adopted in recent years by the politics to deal with a "security" emergency which in reality does not exist.

There are no translations available.

Such a shameful law as the criminalization of illegal immigrants in the security decree has been approved and sold to the Italians just for a reason. Because for years the information has determined the equation between clandestine and criminal, and people just hearing the word think to cases of violent rapists and robbers, even if the illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes are really a small minority.

Often we speak badly of crime journalism because it would be morbid: people are concerned with violent crime more than anything else to throw a glance on the dark depths of the human soul. But crime news also has their utility, when you need to warn potential victims about the presence of a criminal. The case of rapes in Rome for example was reported by the major italian media with considerable delay.

The rejections keep going on the high seas but the media dont' speak about them, perhaps because they are ashamed. Yesterday the news, almost invisible even in the web, of 47 immigrants, including 20 women, "relieved" 70 miles south of Lampedusa and brought back to Libya. Other 89 were rejected on July 1. Among them 9 women and 3 children. But we'll not see them on television, because in this case Italians could understand that these are human beings like us and not criminals.

Hatred now runs free in this country, a fierce hatred, senseless and stupid, for the most part ignored by media and citizens. Yesterday, a Somali refugee was beaten in Bari by a bus driver who wanted to stop him from boarding the bus, without any apparent reason. A few days ago a 64 years old Italian citizen of Egyptian origin was savagely beaten by a whole Italian family: grandparents, parents and son, for daring to park on a piece of road of which the family claimed possession.
