Ci sono voluti sette anni e mezzo di guerra, 4.419 soldati americani uccisi, un numero di civili morti imprecisato e un nuovo presidente per vedere le truppe americane iniziare il ritiro dall’Iraq. Secondo quanto riferito dalla Nbc, l’ultima brigata da combattimento ha superato nella notte il confine con il Kuwait, anticipando, di fatto, la fine dell’impegno diretto in combattimento dell’esercito statunitense, fissato per il prossimo 31 agosto.

Ogni volta che in Italia o in altri Stati europei si riapre il dibattito sulla legittimità o meno per le donne arabe di indossare in questi Paesi il velo integrale si finisce per fare sempre discussioni sulla discriminazione e sulla libertà individuale. Eppure il velo integrale è vietato in molti paesi arabi: ultimo fra questi la Siria dove, alcune settimane fa, il ministero dell’istruzione superiore ha vietato alle donne di indossare il burqa e il niqab nelle università pubbliche.

Sono ore molto difficili, queste, per Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, una madre iraniana di 42 anni, in carcere dal 2006 dopo una condanna per adulterio. La sua esecuzione a morte per lapidazione doveva già essere stata eseguita, ma la mobilitazione internazionale è riuscita, momentaneamente, a sospendere questa inumana sentenza.

In a country like Italy, it's a news that a woman, only 41 years old and with two children, becomes prime minister. It happens in Finland, a country from which Italians should learn so much. Mari Kiviniemi became premier and now Finnish top brass are becoming more and more "pink" given that since 10 years another woman, Tarja Kaarina Halonen, is Finland President. And 11 of the 20 ministers of government are women. And all this happens without any "female quotas". 

Europe, at the moment, is united only by a coin (not even for all countries), but it's beginning to have many problems within its member states. The latest example comes from the election results in Belgium. King Albert II started consultations after the polls have declared the victory of the Flemish separatists.

The Gaza Strip has been under Israeli siege since for a long time. Since, after the removal of Israeli settlers in 2005, Hamas won the elections of 2007. The purpose of the siege is to starve and impoverish the Palestinian population, more than one million people, enough to cause the social and political collapse of Hamas, which has never recognized the existence of Israel. But this political and military tug means great suffering to the people of Gaza. To alleviate the harshness of the siege a fleet of humanitarian aid left a few days ago from Turkey.

Sixty dead people, thirty according for others: no certainty on the numbers as often happens when the wars are very far from the media. The only certainty is that the final number will be known only at the end when clashes between traffickers and police, in Jamaica, will stop. A carnage that could last for a long time, at least until will be arrested the drug boss, Christopher "Dudus" Coke.

Sono in protesta da oltre due mesi, ma le autorità thailandesi sembrano ancora molto lontane dal dare ascolto al movimento delle Camicie rosse. La richiesta è rivolta al premier Abhisit Vejjajiva: rassegnare le dimissioni e indire nuove elezioni. Gli accordi, però, non arrivano e il popolo continua a morire. Soprattutto in queste ore, quando le forze dell’ordine hanno iniziato ad attaccare l’accampamento dei ribelli.

“L’amministrazione americana è profondamente irritata per il modo in cui si stanno organizzando le prossime elezioni legislative nel Myanmar”, per questo motivo oggi Kurt Campbell, assistente del Segretario di Stato per l’est asiatico e il Pacifico, è arrivato nel Paese dove ha incontrato alcuni rappresentanti del governo e dell’opposizione. La visita, però, non è riuscita a calmare le acque tra Stati Uniti e l’ex Birmania.
