The situation in Iran worsens . The iron fist of repression hits, from control of the streets to the prohibition for foreign journalists to walk in the cities. And in the Friday prayer yesterday, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami gave a speech along the lines of Hitler. The religious leader, considered one of the most reactionary cleric in the country, said that the leaders of the protest who have been arrested should be sentenced to death "as the enemies of God."
He also said that Neda, the girl killed in the street before the eyes of the world, was murdered by the demonstrators themselves, because "the government forces do not shoot a woman in a periferic road." And of course he didn't forget the usual accusations against Israel and the United States, which according to the regime are the true supporters of the protest.
Meanwhile, police and militia basji disperse any group of people who meet in the streets and now enter homes at night beating all the occupants when they hear the songs and cries of protest from the rooftops.
Ahmad Khatami is a great supporter of the supreme guide Khamenei and of president Ahmadinejad. Curiously his almost namesake Mohammad Khatami is a famous religious reformist, President from 1997 to 2005, a friend of Mousavi.
If the voice of the regime is now of this kind the condemnation of the repression with words made by EU leaders and the U.S. seems pathetic. The idea of being able to talk to a regime that kills the demonstrators on the streets, prepares to condemn to death all the leaders of the opposition and denies having committed any crime seems simply ridiculous. It's true that we know very well that the leaders of the world talk so much about human rights but in reality are only interested in money, and trade with Iran, especially for Europe and Russia, is booming. It's true that an embargo, as well as being generally uneffective, would be very difficult to implement and would be rather harmful for the population, but can the world stand by and watch while a mad and bloodthirsty paranoid regime tries to get the atomic bombs? If the Iranian government continues on this line will be dark times for Iran and the world.
